7 — Hiking and Biking in the Vicinity

  1. Hiking, and riding a bicycle or motorbike, are possible on sealed country roads with little traffic in the vicinity of Baan Sammi.
  2. Some routes on country roads are mentioned in the blog, Public and Private Transportation in Chiang Mai
  3. Please, consider the following safety guidelines.
  4. Personal security: We believe that there is virtually no risk to men or women of being robbed, even during the night times.
  5. Burglary: There is no high risk of burglary of your bicycle or motorbike when being parked somewhere for shopping, but do lock your vehicle. Belongings of low value can be left in the basket of a bicycle or motorbike while shopping.
  6. Traffic accident: There is little chance to get involved in a traffic accident on country roads, but be attentive especially at blind road curves, at blind corners within villages, and at potholes of the road surface. Front and rear lights are needed for your bicycle if you drive at twilight and at night. Riding a motorbike should never be done without a helmet.
  7. Street dogs: Many Thais keep dogs, so it is not surprising when dogs stray on the streets. Most dogs are friendly and quiet, but some dogs might bark when you are passing by. This could irritate you. The best conflict-avoiding strategy is to go or drive slowly, offering your friendship to the dog by carefully throwing dried dog food from a secure distance. So if you go out, be prepared to always have some dried dog food in your pocket.
  8. Weather: Be prepared to have protection against sun and rain, and carry a small bottle of water during the hot season.
  9. Orientation: Be equipped with a map and a mobile phone.

Route (12): There are 5 possible routes from Baan Sammi to Doi Saket. This route is the shortest and also the best for bicyclists and motorcyclists who prefer country roads with as little traffic as possible.
